GFCI Outlets: Oregon's Most Important Electrical Safety Upgrade

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets are arguably the single most important electrical safety device in a residential home, and yet millions of older Oregon homes still have standard unprotected outlets in the high-risk wet areas where GFCIs are required. A GFCI outlet works by continuously monitoring the balance of electrical current flowing through the hot and neutral conductors of a circuit. If the GFCI detects even a tiny imbalance of as little as 4 to 6 milliamps — indicating that current is leaking through an unintended path, such as through a person's body — it cuts power to the outlet in less than 1/40th of a second, far faster than the human nervous system can react. This speed is critical: at 60 milliamps, a ground fault can cause ventricular fibrillation and death, but a GFCI will have already cut power at 4 to 6 milliamps, well below the threshold of serious injury.
